In the state of Punjab, there belongs a very vibrant and
fun-loving community- Khatris. And their weddings are even more vibrant and
joyous. Most families prefer to get their son or daughter married within their
own community.

The Khatri weddings are known to be full of enthusiasm. The

The next ritual is of the God Bharai. Conducted two or three

and tiny shells. It is said that this keeps all the evil eyes and negative
powers away from the bride and groom. Later, just a day or two before the
wedding, the mehendi ceremony is conducted. Mehendi is applied to both hands
and feet of the bride. It is a common belief that if the colour of the Mehendi
is dark, then the bride’s husband will love her more. Various dance and singing
performances are also held where the family celebrates the wedding.
Then the ritual of ‘Sedhe hath tanni kadhai’, which is
commonly known as the haldi ceremony, is conducted. Both families indulge
together in applying a paste of turmeric, besan, mustard oil and curd to the
bride and groom. The haldi paste is said to add more glow to the skin before
the wedding. Later, the bride’s maternal uncle and aunt offer her a set of red
bangles in the Chuda ceremony. They also give her their blessings and gifts.
On the wedding eve, the groom and his family indulge in the
Sehrabandhi and Ghudchadhi. The eldermost male of the groom’s family ties the
veil onto the groom’s forehead which is known as Sehrabandhi. After this the
Ghudchadhi takes place where the groom climbs on the horse and proceeds towards
the wedding venue with the baarat. Then after the baraat reaches the venue, the
bride and groom exchange garland in the ceremony of Varmala. After the varmala
ceremony, the couple-to-be is taken to the mandap where in front of the holy
fire; the father of the bride performs Kanyadan. Later, the groom ties
mangalsutra on the bride’s neck to sanctify the marriage.
